Joshua 6:15-21

AND THE WALLS CAME DOWN...

Nothing in the world is like the miracle of God bringing walls down. Whatever those walls may be. I've experienced this miracle in my life many times and seen others experience it right before my eyes. I've watched as a person who was tortured and crippled with unforgiveness and bitterness in their life towards someone who had hurt them deeply - finally let go of that unforgiveness and pain. And when that wall comes down, the floodgates of heaven open and peace like a river flows in with the type of healing that can only be expained when you've experienced it personally. I've seen walls of addiction crumble, walls of unbelief, walls of deep discouragement and depression, walls of doubt, and walls of hopelessness - all destroyed and brought down by the power of the Holy Spirit of God. God is the collapser of walls. He is the ultimate destroyer of ungodly fortresses that keep people in darkness and bondage. Only He can bring those kind of walls down. Not our own strength, or wisdom, or knowledge, or counseling - we need those things just as we need doctors and counselors - but God and God alone is the Great Physician - the Almighty destroyer of walls that seek to enslave us in bondage.

WHAT ARE YOUR WALLS TODAY?

Think about that for a few minutes. What seemingly impenetrable fortresses have an area or areas of your life trapped - unable to get past and be free? Where are you esnslaved and held in bondage? Is there someone you need to forgive and when you think about actually, really, deeply forgiving them you get sick to your stomach and can't even really entertain the thought? Is there an addiction you can't ever seem to really break free of? Are you stuck in a cycle of not having or being able to keep a job? Is there a wall around your finances that you can't seem to get over? I could go on and on, but I don't need to tell you what your walls are - you already know full well. Well let me tell you something today straight from the Holy Word of God - HE CAN BRING THOSE WALLS DOWN! There is hope my friend - no matter what that wall might be!

First - you must believe there is indeed hope. This passage we've been studying isn't just a great story that happened in the past for us to go WOW - that is awesome! It's a story of spiritual principles that we can out into practice today to turn a corner in our lives, see walls crumble, and begin to take new ground according to the great promises of God! That is great news!

Second - start today putting these truths into practice that we've been reading and discussing. Spend time in prayer, worship, in the presence of God just as we see the example of the priests blowing the trumpets before the ark of the covenent marched around the city. You begin to march around the walls you want to see crumble - singing the song of freedom thats in your heart as you seek God in His presence.

Third - keep going! God will surely bring the walls down! Your job is to continue to blow that trumpet and be in His Holy presence. God is your forward and rear guard as you continue to march. Let others around you speak into your life through prayer, words of encouragement and hope. You're not alone in this battle my friend - you are part of the army of God and we are here for each other! Open up to someone you love and trust that has the same hope in God as you do and let them help lift your arms as you wait in expectation for the walls to come down.

Finally - Shout! Let His praises fill your mouth and heart. Sing and make music in your heart unto God. Live a lifestyle of worship and don't stop. Worship on your own and gather with the rest of your church family as you shout together and worship the Lord. That wall will come down! And when it begins to crumble you will know it - and you will surely know that it was God Himself that brought it down. Talk about shouting! Like I said before - there is indeed nothing like the miracle of God bringing a wall down in your life. You will never be the same. Hope and faith will rise like a spring coming from the deepest place in your heart - and you'll be part many times over of helping others see walls in their lives crumble as well.

*You just read your lesson for today.

*Now take a time to worship and pray.

*Pray about the fifth and sixth of The Seven Areas of Life:

Marital and Parental
Pray over your marriage and your family.
*Pray for your church, it's pastor, leaders, people and community.

*Finally, close by praising God and thanking him for destroying the walls in your life that try to hold you in bondage.
What is it about shouting? Kind of a strange thing to just shout into the air and stuff, right? Well, let's think about this. It's very human to shout - we shout all the time. Primarily in just a few ways though - either in anger or in joy, or just trying to be heard in some situation. We can yell at the dog or the kids, or at a car when we bust our knuckles working on it, or in traffic, and so on. Or we can shout when we're trying to get someones attention over a long distance, or over a lot of background noise. Or... we shout when our team scores a touchdown or makes a good play - a shout of joy and victory. Whole stadiums and even whole nations shout at the same time when their team does something good. There have been times, especially in the world cup of soccer, that when a national team scores or wins the game in the final whole cities erupt in cheering and shouting and it can be heard by everyone in the city like a huge roar. What if that happened from people shouting to the Lord? What would happen? Whe King David brought the ark back it was one of the greatest celebrations ever -

So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 2 Sam 6:12-15

Guys, the presence of the Lord (represeted by the ark) is the greatest cause for us to shout for joy more than anything in the world! Infintely more than a sporting event! God is our eternal victory, our Champion, our Vindicator, our Redeemer, our Joy and the Strenth of our lives! He is worthy of us turning our heads to heaven and shouting with all our might unto him! Releasing our emotions and joy towards the One who has delivered us from the pit and set our feet on solid ground! Listen to what is written in His word about God's people shouting in joy unto Him:

Then my head will be exalted
   above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the LORD. Ps 27:6

May those who delight in my vindication
   shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, “The LORD be exalted,
who delights in the well-being of his servant.” Ps 35:27

God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
<sup id="en-NIV-14632" class="versenum">6</sup> Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises. Ps 47:5-6

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.

3 For the LORD is the great God,
the great King above all gods. Ps 95:1-3

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
   burst into jubilant song with music;
5 make music to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing, Ps 98:4-5

Isa 44:24

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,

   “Hosanna![a]”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[b]

“Blessed is the king of Israel!” John 12:12-13

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

   “Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
   and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready. Rev 19:6-7

And those are just a few! Guys, let your heart bring forth a shout to the Lord. If stadiums full of people cheering about a ball crossing a chalk line shout at the top of their lungs how much more should be raise our voices and shout to the One who fought the battle for all mankind through the sacrifice of His own blood, and conquered death and the grave for us! Let us shout for joy!!!

*Pray for your church, it's pastor, leaders, people and community.

*Finally, close by letting everything go and simply worshipping Him. All this time the trumpets were sounding. Joshua 6:8-9

What trumpet are you blowing? What is the song coming from your life? When people are around you what song do they hear? If you picked a song that described what it is like to be in your presence what song would it be? I'm not talking about your favorite song, I'm simply saying what do you and others hear as the music coming from your soul, your mouth, your actions.

Now let me ask you another question. What would you like to be the song coming from your life? Is it different from what is currently there? What trumpet would you like to be blowing?

These might sound like kind of weird thoughts but bear with me for a minute. Every person on earth has a song coming from their life. You have a different type of feeling when you're around each individual. And each person around you picks up on the music that is produced from your character, your choice of words, your actions. For instance, some people are like listening to excellent classical music - they are peaceful, sophisticated, soft spoken, yet complex and meaningful. Someone else might be like a pop song, very energetic, positive, fun to be around, etc. Get the picture? It's an analogy that has faults, like any analogy, but for the most part it's a really revealing way to describe someones persona, the presence that they carry with them wherever they go. Being around an angry, spiteful, critical person who constantly uses harsh words and foul language is indeed another type of song, I'll let you imagine for yourself what that song would sound like to you. We all are blowing a trumpet guys - every single one of us. And everybody around us hears that sound loud and clear. Loud, or melancholy, or cutting, or meaningful, or depressing, or uplifting, encouraging, etc. etc. etc. etc.

So I ask you again, what is the sound people hear coming from your life? If it's not what you would like it to be then praise God for recognizing that - He is there to help you! God is very near you when your are broken hearted. He is the only true one that can fill your life with the music of Heaven. It all starts by being in the presence of God. Being filled with His Holy Spirit. Listen again to the Word of God:

the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the LORD went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the LORD’s covenant followed them.

Remember, the ark of the Lord is a physical representation of a spiritual truth. It represents the very presence of God. When we recognize ourselves as priests of the Lord, Holy unto Him and sanctified unto the Lord for His service through the finished work of Christ on the cross, we begin to carry around with us the very presence of God himself. And people, we will notice that! And everyone around us will hear that song and feel the presence of God's Holy Spirit when they arre around us! Even what we actually listen to in our lives will change! You'll find yourself wanting more and more to hear the song of Heaven, songs that exalt the Lord and bring you into His presence. The trumpet you are blowing will bring with it the presence of God to you and all who are around you!

DAY 3

*You just read your lesson for today!

*Now take a time to worship and pray.

*Pray about the third of The Seven Areas of Life:

Social - Your relationship with others
Pray that your life will reflect God to others. Take time to examine what it is you think is the sound of the trumpet coming from your life. Take time to examine if there are those you need to forgive and let go of past hurts. Ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit, and fill you with songs of praise and worship in your heart. Ask him to make this scripture a reality in your life:

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Eph 5:18-20

*Pray for your church, it's pastor, leaders, people and community.

*Finally, close by letting everything go and simply worshipping Him. Put on a worship song or slip your headphones on with a praise song on and stop everything - tell Him you love Him and that He is your God, your loving Father, your everything! Let your heart forget everything else and focus only on our awesome God! The Holy Spirit will fill you friends, the enemies of your soul will be thrown into confusion, and the walls around the new ground you are about to take will start to weaken and begin to crumble. WORSHIP HIM WITH COMPLETE ABANDON!

Love you guys and the music coming from your lives :)

The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. Josh 6:12-14

Notice the order of the way they marched. They had armed men in the very front and back (the rear guard) Then the were priests blowing the trumpets. Immediately behind them was the ark of the Lord. And following the ark were the rear guards. Today I want to focus on the ark of the Lord. Let's go back to when God showed His people exactly how to make it.

“Make an atonement cover of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. 18 And make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. 19 Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. 20 The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. 21 Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law that I will give you. 22 There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites. Ex 25:17-22

The ark was built, as was the entire portable tabernacle the people were commanded by God to build, during their time in the wilderness after being delivered from Egypt. There the people met with the Lord. They had to follow incredibly specific instructions in order to meet with the Lord and the nation be forgiven of their sins. In the very heart of the tabernacle, in the Holy of Holies, sat the ark of the covenant. There in the Holy of Holies, God's very presence dwelt. Once a year, after following to the letter the instructions of the Lord, the high priest would enter behind the curtain, into the Holy of Holies, and present an offering of blood on top of the mercy seat, on the ark itself. If one thing was done wrong or out of order, the priest would be wiped out by the sheer power of God's holy presence, and they would have to drag him out with a rope. If all was done right, the sins of the nation would be forgiven and washed away for the past year. And the preist would breath a huge sigh of relief!

Guys, that same ark of the covenent was placed in Solomons temple in the time of Jesus. The nation of Israel still followed that pattern. Yet you probably know what happened on the day Jesus was crucified - His blood, the blood of the spotless Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, was applied to the mercy seat and the sins of all mankind were removed past, present and future - Praise God!. And the veil, or curtain, that seperated mankind from being in the presence of God, was torn, top to bottom, revealing the ark of the covenant to us all. We, who worship Jesus and trust in His blood to make us righteous before God, are now priests of the Most High who have full and complete access to the very presence of God Almighty!

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. Rev 1:5-6

So back to Jericho and the instructions God gave Joshua to destroy the city and take the land He had promised them. The priests, who we have now become in the New Covenant that Jesus established by offering Himself as the spotless lamb, were to blow their trumpets with the ark directly behind them. People, we must go with the ark! We must go with the presence of God! And how do we go into battle with the presence of God with us? Worship, worship, worship, it is about worshipping our Lord with total abandon - blowing our trumpets for all to hear that we love our God, we serve Him, we trust Him, and He is exalted above all the earth! Worship confounds the enemy, fixes our minds on God, strengthens our spirits for battle, and brings down the walls!! One more quick story:

He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.’”

18 Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. 19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.” 21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his[c] holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

   “Give thanks to the LORD,
   for his love endures forever.”

22 As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 2 Chronicles 20:15-23

Guys, to turn the corner in your life from survival to taking ground, you must begin to have a lifestyle of worshipping the Lord! Blowing your trumpet and announcing that you are coming in the name of the Lord with the presence of God with you! You can worship anywhere, anytime. In your car, in the shower, etc. etc... And when we gather together as the people of God in corporate worship - let your heart soar in total abandon unto your King, singing, clapping, shouting, jumping, and we will see the walls come down!

DAY 2

*You just read your lesson for today!

*Now take a time to worship and pray.

*Pray about the second of The Seven Areas of Life:

Psychological - My Mind, Will and Emotions
Pray that the Lord will align your mind, will, and emotions with what He wants for you. Ask the Lord to renew your mind through His word, and to give you power to not let your emotions control your decision - but His truth and His truth only will control the decisions you make each and every day.

*Pray for your church, it's pastor, leaders, people and community.

*Finally, close by letting everything go and simply worshipping Him. Put on a worship song or slip your headphones on with a worship song on and stop everything - tell Him you love Him and that He is your God, your loving Father, your everything! Let your heart forget everything else and focus only on our awesome God! The Hly Spirit will fill you friends, the enemies of your soul will be thrown into confusion, and the walls around the new ground you are about to take will start to weaken and begin to crumble. WORSHIP HIM WITH COMPLETE ABANDON!

God bless you all today, I can feel the praises rising already :)

Love you, Pastor Kenny

Every Day this week I'll be posting a short, encouraging lesson to help you move from a place of survival to a mindset of taking ground. I'm talking about taking your life back and going on the offensive into the dreams, hopes, visions, and calling that dwell in your heart and Spirit. This is not a "name it and claim it" mindset, it's something that God is teaching me from His word about leaving behind wrong thinking, sin, and discouragement and moving towards obedience, faith, and vision for the future God has for me, you and the body of Christ. I've been reading and meditating on the book of Joshua for several months now, taking in other passages from scripture as well as some books I've been reading by various authors, and I want to share some things I believe God is showing me about this subject. So here's what I'll be doing this week, which will culminate in this Sunday's service at Elevation when we gather together to worship. Let me start with a little more background.

In Joshua chapter six, God's people, led by Moses' successor Joshua, were directed by the Lord very specifically on how to fight the very first battle they were to undertake as they entered the promised land. They had wandered in the desert for the last 40 years until the unbelieving generation actually died off, and a new generation had grown up and was ready to leave the wilderness and begin taking ground in the new land by faith. Almost forty years before this day, Moses had sent spies into the land and all of them, except two men, Caleb and Joshua, came back saying there was no way they could take the new land, the people were too big - their weapons were better, and blah, blah, blah, we can't take the land. The people listened to this bad report and they rebelled as unbelief filled their hearts. They complained, grumbled and ultimately rejected the plan to go in and possess this new land as God had promised. Their thinking was wrong, they were disobedient and rebellious and had swallowed the bitter pill of discouragement. Their fate was sealed for the next 40 years.

Jump back ahead now to Joshua 6 and the battle of Jericho. The generation that rebelled against God has died off and Joshua is about to lead this new generation into the first battle, at the command of God. They had crossed the Jordan through by the mighty hand of God and were perched on the ready to begin by taking the city of Jericho. One thing I want to put into your heart right away is this - when you turn the corner from survival to taking ground, it doesn't mean you're not going to be fighting battles - on the contrary, you WILL be fighting battles my friends, possibly even more! The difference is the battles you fight now will be offensive battles that move you INTO the promises of God instead of wandering around fighting off all the junk we battle against when we're in places of sin, disoebience and discouragement. We have to leave those things behind us friends and follow God into battles that move us into the dreams, hopes, and calling HE has PUT IN our HEARTS.

God told Joshua the battle plan:

2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.” Joshua 6:2-5

So for the next six days I'm giving you a challenge to discipline yourself spiritually and prepare to turn some corners in your life. Here's the challenge:

1.) Find some time each day to read this lesson and meditate on God's word.

2.) Just as the priests carried the Ark, which represents the presence of God to us now, you take time each day this week to be in God's presence through worship and prayer. After reading the lesson spend a few minutes worshipping God and praying, inviting the Holy Spirit to fill you, teach you, guide you, and comfort you.

3.) Specifically pray over each of the seven areas of your life (which I will list for you), one or two each day, for six days straight.

4.) Pray for Elevation Church, or whatever church you are a part of, to turn a corner and begin taking new ground, rescuing souls unto slavation, and bringing healing and hope to our people and our community.

5.) Close by asking the Lord to give you an obedient heart, fresh insight, revelation, courage and hope to fulfill the plans He has for you, as you leave behind the things that keep you wandering in the desert - disobedience, sin, fear, and discouragement. Let a heart of repentance fill you as you receive forgiveness and new joy!

Will you accept this challenge today? And if you miss a day, just move on and keep going! This isn't a religious, notch on your belt thing - it's simply disciplining yourself to the Lord to bring you into a new place of faith, obedience, hope and healing.

DAY 1 - TODAY'S LESSON

*You just read your lesson for today!

*Now take a time to worship and pray.

*Pray about the first of The Seven Areas of Life: (Let's add one on and call it 8)

Spiritual – My Relationship with God

Psychological - My Mind, Will and Emotions

Social – My Realtionship with Others

Physical – My Body

Financial – My Money

Marital – My Marriage

Parental – My Children

Vocational - My Contribution (the 8th one we added :)

So start today by praying over your spiritual life - that your relationship with God would grow in depth and closeness.

*Pray for your church, it's pastor, leaders, people and community.

*Finally, close with honest repentance, choosing to let go of the things that hinder your walk with God, and receieve forgiveness, joy and strength to fight new battles - battles of taking ground!

God bless you guys, I hope this is really going to be an encouragement to you. I know it has meant so much to me as God has been woking with me to leave the past behind along with the junk that hinders my life, and turn the corner to begin fighting new battles and rescuing souls!

Love you and look for tomorrow's lesson in the morning!

For me, it was first total shock - could it really be true? Did we actually find and bring to justice a man that has been responsible for so much terror and loss of human life for the last several decades? Then as we were waiting for the President to speak, the crowds began to gather in front of the White House and at Ground Zero and Times Square. I began to feel the relief, the closure, the exhilaration that it seemed as if a chapter in the life of our nation, and for that matter many nations all over the globe, has been completed and a great justice had been done for all the souls and families that have suffered. I also tried to imagine what I might feel like if my wife had died in the Twin Towers, or my son had been killed in the war in Iraq, or my best friend had lost a leg in the war, etc, etc, etc. So much pain, so much suffering. Could it be that much more suffering will be avoided now? I just wanted to share with you some hopes that are stirring in my heart and some areas we can pray for, for our nation and the world.

I'm hoping and praying for every single family member and friend of those lost at 911 to be comforted and healed of their pain, healed of anger and unrest, able to finally let go and release their grief - and most of all - to turn their face towards the Lord, receiving comfort for their souls and hope for a new beginning in their lives.

I'm hoping and praying for every public servant and every soldier in every area of our armed services - to feel the love and gratitude of their entire nation, that they would understand the greatness of their service to us and to the entire world as they are depolyed around the globe, that they supernaturally protected from harm and any retalitory attacks that may be being planned, and that they would see themsleves as ambassadors of God's justice according the Word of God in Romans 13:1-4:

The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

I'm hoping and praying that our nation would experince the kind of unity and national pride that we saw when the attacks happened on 911 - but that this time it will take root and last. That we begin to believe in each other no matter what our differences may be any area. That we begin to work better together to improve each others quality of live by serving each other, expecting nothing in return but a smile.

Would you join me in praying for these things and doing what God puts in your path to bring this hope to others? We can be a part of building God's kingdom everyday in the place you work, live, go to school, shop, play, or relax. God is showing me so many things right now about what it means to "be the church" not just go to church. Jesus commanded us to "go and be" - he promised that God would send the Holy Spirit to give us power to be witnesses of his grace and love to every corner of the earth.

See yourself today in the unique place that God has you - in that place you can be His light to others to show them his love, grace and acceptance. I love this nation of ours - I'll never, ever give up on the hope that our founders felt as they drafted our constitution - the hope of freedom that so very many of our friends and brothers, both now and in the past, have spilled their blood for. You and I are Americans - and I am incredibly proud to unbelievably blessed to part of this nation - One Nation under God that we still are!

In God we Trust, Pastor Kenny

Personally, I have been touched and in awe on many, many, occasions during the readings. Sometimes, while I was writing the words from the book, I would have to stop, just close my eyes, and take in the power of the story while the presence of God ministered to my heart. It was heart breaking so many times to be confronteed with and have a better understanding of the suffering our Lord endured for our souls to be free. In that knowledge comes a deeper appreciation - and a greater love - for my Savior. And for that, it was beyond worth it.

So may you be blessed, encouraged, empowered and filled with the Holy Spirit as you read the final posts, or go back and read any of the days from the previous weeks. Today, Saturday morning, as I write this note to you, I am so filled and blessed with love overflowing and gratefulness to the awesome, ever-present love of my Savior towards me -

Lord Jesus, we bow down and place our lives at your feet as we thank you for the life you have provided for us thorugh your suffering, death and resurrection. We are forever yours and forever grateful - take our lives and help us to share this love with others that have no idea of what you did for them. Help us share this love with our spouses, our children, our families, our friends, and our neighbors. We love you Mighty Savior!

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Peter, hold me. Just hold me. I can't stop shaking. Feel it? Hold me tight. I stood in the place where Moses stood, and the world is spinning so fast -
Listen, oils and spices, ointment jars. That's it. Our hands were full, but that's all we carried. Honestly, nothing for ourselves, all for the body of Jesus. Mary and Salome and me. We went outside the city wall. The sun was just rising. Dew on the grass was white, so that we made three trails behind us. And we cast long shadows. There was a sparrow. We wanted to honor Jesus. We were going to touch him. I thought about the smell.
    Old Mary was crying.
Suddenly she stopped and said that we were fools, that we couldn't anoint him.
    She made me angry.
"Who's going to stop us," I shouted. "Who cares for a criminal's corpse?"
"No," the old woman said, "that's not it. You saw it, too."
    "Saw what?"
"The stone. Who will roll the stone away from the door?"
"Mary! I will, allright?" I was so mad I really felt I could do it alone. I had seven furies in my breast. I didn't wait. I swept ahead with long strides, raging. Oh, I had such hate for the world and all things and God -
But the stone was rolled back.
No, Peter, listen! This is a very big stone, a very heavy stone, not even you could move it uphill, don't you see? But the door of the tomb was open! All my feelings went straight to fear. Something was wrong. I wasn't mad, I was panicking.
I dropped the ointments. I crept forward and went down on my knees and looked inside -
Do you remember what you told me about Moses and Elijah with Jesus on the mountain, you saw all three of them, and a cloud came, and Jesus grew so bright it blinded you, and the voice of God came down and roared, remember? Peter, I believe you now. And I kiss you, dear friend because of it. I love you so much for telling me that story. O Peter, I know how you felt! I know exactly. It was terror, right? More than that: fear and love together.
Listen! There was a young man in the tomb, dressed in white like Jesus on the mountain. But not Jesus! Jesus was not there!
This young man knew me. He knew what I was doing there. I never saw him before. He said, "You're looking for Jesus. He has risen."
Peter, are you listening? Do you understand? He said risen!
    I didn't scream.
The man pointed at a stone ledge inside the tomb and said, "He is not here. See the place where they laid him."
I did not scream then - but I stared at the bare ledge and started to shake, and I'll tell you why. Terror. Fear and wonder and love all mixed in me, and my body couldn't take it. Oh, Peter, I still can't take it, but I believe it. I believe it. I stood in the spot where Jesus came back to life. That's so holy! That's so frightening. He isn't the man I thought he was. He is the glory of God! I stood as close as Moses did, closer - and I'll tell you why I didn't scream. Because I couldn't even breathe. I stared at the stone and I thought how he loved me, how he loves me, loves me, Peter, plain Mary from Magdala who had seven devils once and no prospects, and it was enough that he loved me so long as he lived, but then he died and it was nothing. But now think, Peter! Think how terribly mighty that love must be to rise from the dead! Peter, do you understand what I'm saying to you? This is the love of Almighty God the Father, now, right here! Right here! That's why I'm shaking. Hold me. Hold me. I promise, I'm telling the truth. Hold me tight. Stop my shaking. Peter, believe me -
Well, well, and if you can't believe me, come with me.
The young man in white told me to tell you what to do now, Simon.
Hold me just a little longer, dear, good, and stony Simon. It's a killing terror, isn't it? Exquisite and sharp - a painful, impossible joy. Yes - but I am growing calmer now. Thank you. Here, let me kiss you. And now what?
Why, now we will go and see the Lord alive. And then you will believe me.
For Jesus is going before us to Galilee; there you will see him, exactly as he promised.

Alleluia!
I see thee, and I do not die!
I see me in thy seeing eye!
As thou art life, in Life am I,
In love, in Christ and crucified.

Alleluia!
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

            Amen.

from "Reliving the Passion," by Walter Wangerin Jr.

Saturday, April 23rd - The Fortieth Day

Mark 15:47
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid

Stone cold. There's nowhere to go.
What do I do? I don't know what to do. Nothing. The Sabbath has started. So what? So, if I pray I'll be mouthing the sounds. Nothing. And if I pray a vain repetition, what then? Will heaven be offended? Well, heaven has offended me!
Joseph's stone is like the period that stops the sentence/ Boom! - the story's done. And when the story's over, the very air is empty. No place for me. No home for my soul. Silence. Why do I keep standing here. It's dark. It's midnight. Everyone's gone home. Except me. Abandoned. Nothing.
Why can't I leave the tombs?
Because the whole world is a graveyard. Because this is the one that has my Lord.
Jesus! Jesus! It is the Sabbath; then let it be the Sabbath after all. Pray your prayers. However hollow and unsatisfying they may feel, God can fill them. God is God, who made the world from nothing - and God as God can still astonish you. He can make of your mouthings a prayer - and of your groanings a hymn. Observe the ritual. Prepare your spices. Return on Sunday, even to this scene of your sorrow, expecting nothing but a corpse, planning nothing but to sigh once more and pat respects.
One story is done indeed, my Magdalene. You're right. You've entered the dark night of the soul.
But another story - one you cannot conceive of (it's God who conceives it!) - starts at sunrise. And the empty time between, while sadly you prepare the spices, is in fact preparing you! Soon you will change. Soon you will become that holy conundrum which must baffle and antagonize the world: a saint. Saint Mary Magdalene. "As dying and behold we live; as punished and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things" - that host of contradictions, the beauty of the Spirit, the puzzle of all who know him not, the character of the saints!
Come again on Sunday, Mary, and see how it is that God makes saints.
                                                    Come, follow.

Friday, April 22nd - The Thirty Ninth Day Good Friday

Mark 15:46
So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

Today all times collide. Today all stories are the same. It was Friday then. It is Friday now. We call them both by the preposterous name: Good.
What once was, now - by the mystery of the holy story faithfully and fearfully remembered - is.
Joseph has unrolled a linen cloth and laid it on the ground. It is close-woven and white. It is longer than the human frame and twice as wide. It is a shroud.
He has leaned a ladder to the back side of the cross.
    He has climbed the ladder.
Now he draws ropes around the chest, beneath the shoulders of our Lord and over the beam of wood. He throws the loose ends down to the centurion facing him. With a sudden force - and with anguish that there must be force - he wrenches the spikes from the crossbar. The left one: the body slumps. The ropes go taut. The centurion has one in each hand. Joseph whispers, "Wait," descends, then stands below the slouching corpse, below the rain of the dead man's hair. He applies himself to the spikes through the heels. The legs drop.
    "Now," he whispers.
With his left arm he is hugging Jesus at the knees.
    "Lower him."
By sad degrees as the Roman pays out the rope, the body sinks, shoulders hunched to the ears, Jesus resistless. Joseph receives the torso on his right arm. The head falls back. The mouth opens. The eyes are lidded, blind. The hair rains at Joseph's elbow. Jesus is gaunt. As light as an empty scrip. The body without the sounding breath is light and so pitifully little. Joseph kneels and lays him on the shroud and begins to wind the linen around him for burial.
Somewhere a woman delivers a long, soft, terrible sigh to the world. Who is that?
The door to the tomb is a hole in a stone no higher than a human waist. Joseph enters backward, bent down, bearing the shoulders of Jesus. The centurion, on his knees, keeps the legs from dragging dirt.
"Thank you," says Joseph. His voice echoes in the hollow rock. "Thank you. This is enough."
He disposes the body alone, then, and emerges into the darker part of the evening. The sun has set. The sky is empty. The air is absolutely still.
There is a descending groove in the stone ledge below the sepulcher's door. Joseph rolls a flat stone down into this groove. A single, slow revolution will bring it flush to the hole No animals will desecrate this body.
There are two sounds in the dusk: the grinding of the stone in stone - and once more the soft sigh, a low, compulsive, wordless sigh. Who's is that?
Then the door is closed. The deed is done. It is finished.

That sigh was me, Lord
That weeper is me, the twentieth century me, attending your burial. Your dying is never far away nor long ago, but always as close as my own. I cry for the sorrow of being at your death.
But I cry also in gratitude that you will be at my death, O my Savior - and that, though I can only cry for yours, you rescue me from mine.
                        Amen

from "Reliving the Passion," by Walter Wangerin Jr.
